The professional boxer Andre Berto tested positive for the steroid Nandrolone. The drug testing was conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA).
This boxer had to meet Victor Ortiz on June 23, 2012 in Los Angeles. Andre Berto agreed to submit to random drug testing before the match. T: E ratio method and carbon isotope ratio testing were used; they both indicated about intake of the anabolic steroid Nandrolone.
It was already the second time this month, when the VADA tested boxers and caught them administering steroids. The first boxer that tested positive this month due to tests conducted by the VADA was Lamont Peterson. He was scheduled to fight against Amir Khan. It is quite ironically that Peterson requested random blood and urine testing. The drug test conducted by the VADA indicated that exogenous testosterone was in this boxer’s system some weeks before the match.
The tests conducted by the VADA influenced greatly on financial position of several companies. For example, Golden Boy Promotions lost great potential profit due to positives of Lamont Peterson. It was defined by the CEO of the company Richard Schaeffer that the company lost 250, 000 dollars.
The cancelation of the fight between Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz will probably not cost so much because Andre Berto will be possibly replaced by another boxer who will fight against Ortiz.
Berto didn’t explain what had led to his positives. This boxer hired the attorney Howard Jacobs who would represent and defeat him.
Andre Berto said that he had never applied steroids. Thus, he noted that he investigated with his attorney what could lead to positives for steroids. The boxer Andre Berto concluded that he had never cheated; he succeeded in sport due to hard work and dedication.
The attorney Howard Jacobs was hired by numerous other sportspersons who turned out to be victims of contaminated nutritional supplements.
It is confirmed that since Nandrolone has very long half life and it is detected easily, it isn’t very popular among doping sportspeople. But it has been displayed many times that several dietary supplements contained the substance nandrolone that led to positives for steroids. But since sometimes not every compound is written on the label, sportspeople become victims of contaminated sport supplements.
