WADA president: caffeine will not belong to banned drugs again

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) claims that caffeine should belong to forbidden drugs of the World Anti-Doping Agency. The president of the AOC John Coates notices that caffeine promotes addiction to sleeping pills and tranquilizers.
It is known that the Australian swimmers who competed at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics took sleeping pills Stilnox. So, the president of the AOC claims that usage of caffeine resulted in intake of Stilnox.
Stilnox is often sold under the name Zolpidem. It is a sleeping remedy which is taken in case of insomnia.
Coates claims that sportspeople use caffeine for its effects on performance. Consumption of this substance causes insomnia. So, athletes have to use sleeping remedies for treatment of insomnia.
The AOC and Swimming Australia want to prohibit consumption of caffeine. It is their response to the disgraceful case linked with Grant Hackett. A doctor recommended taking Stilnox to this swimmer at the time of the 2003 World Championships. As a result, Grant Hackett became addicted to this sleeping remedy.
Grant Hackett is a well-known swimmer. He won numerous competitions, including the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Alan Thompson, the former coach of the Australian Olympic Team, has also claimed that usage of Stilnox is widely spread among Australian swimmers.
Stilnox was never on the list of banned drugs. Anti-doping agencies didn’t conduct tests to discover intake of this drug.
But when it comes to caffeine, previously it was prohibited by the WADA. But since it became widely spread and used in society, it was excluded from the list of prohibited medications.
John Fahey, the president of the WADA, notices that the WADA made the right decision and excluded caffeine from list of prohibited preparations. He confirmed that caffeine would not be included in the list of prohibited products again.
However numerous specialists state that caffeine is a performance enhancer, John Fahey contests this statement. He confirms that caffeine doesn’t impact on performance. The president of the WADA concludes that no any scientific literature proves ability of caffeine to increase performance.

BOA can’t prevent appearing of Dwain Chambers at 2012 Olympics

The sprinter Dwain Chambers, who successfully served his 2-year suspension for intake of anabolic steroids, was chosen to be the representative of Great Britain in the 2012 Olympics.
Chambers worries about the way to represent the home country. When it comes to the British Olympic Association (BOA), they are not happy to see him participating in the 2012 Olympics. Several former British Olympians don’t support the steroid user as well.
The runner took the steroid tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) introduced by Patrick Arnold. After Don Catlin introduced a method which could disclose administration of THG, Dwain Chambers tested positive for this steroid. It was on November 7, 2003.
Of course, usage of the steroid destroyed his reputation. When he tried to return to professional sports, the BOA decided to change the laws in order to prevent appearing of the sprinter in the 2012 Olympics. The BOA has established the rules which suspend steroid users from Olympics for the whole life.
Introducing this rule, the BOA violated the doping code of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). This situation led to many disputes and news.
The case was even presented in the Court of Arbitration for Sports. The chairman of the BOA Loyd Moynihan put essential efforts in order to prevent appearing of Dwain Chambers or other steroid users at Olympics. Such former Olympians, as Sebastian Coe and Daley Thompson, loudly supported efforts of the BOA.
Daley Thompson claimed that Britain should not compromise. He claimed that Britain should not listen to the rest of the world that don’t want to have high standards in sports. The Court of Arbitration for Sports acted on behalf of the WADA. Chambers was allowed to be the representative of Britain at the 2012 Olympics. This aspect turned out to be an open door for other sportspersons that have served their bans to take part in Olympics.
The cyclist David Millar and the shot-putter Carl Myerscough that have served their bans for usage of steroids will compete at the 2012 Olympics as well.
Despites wasting much time to keep former steroid users from Olympics, the BOA ultimately claimed that not only Dwain Chambers but also Millar, Myerscough or any other athlete that has served a ban successfully may compete at Olympic Games. The CEO of the BOA Andy Hunt has confirmed that any athlete is treated the same way.

European steroid dealer gave large sum of money to avoid extradition to US

Lately a large steroid chain was busted in Austria. It was determined that this company got 40 million Euros due to illicit distribution of steroids. Mihael Karner was identified as the leader of the steroid empire. The USA asked Austria to extradite this steroid dealer to the US. But the steroid dealer wasn’t extradited. This man paid one million Euros to Austrian authorities that sent him to Slovenia, his native country.
Slovenia’s laws are not the same as Austrian’s ones. According to the Slovenian Constitution, it is banned to extradite Slovenian citizens to another country. Mihael Karner turned out to be a lucky individual. If he had been extradited to the USA, he would have probably gone to 40 years in prison.
Federal prosecutors started the investigation linked with this drug ring in 2005. The steroid empire began to function earlier. Federal prosecutors learnt that since 2000 till 2008 the company earned 40 million Euros due to illicit sale of steroids.
Federal prosecutors found in 2005 that Mihael Karner and his wife were involved in illegal sale of steroids but they couldn’t prosecute them because the Karners were in Austria. But later steroid laws in Austria were modified due to suppression by the US. Moreover, the US promoted the arrest of Mihael Karner and his wife.
Although the US tries to enforce other countries of the world to extradite distributors of steroids to the USA, it doesn’t have significant success in this area. But the persons that were involved in “Musclebear” and “British Dragon” were extradited from Cyprus and Thailand to the USA. That time the US had a victory.
As for Mihael Karner, the USA hoped that the extradition would be successful. That’s why it was a real shock for the US, when it was learnt that Karner reached Slovenia safely. So, the USA was defeated this time in the war on steroids.

Swedish experts: anabolic steroids are responsible for cardiovascular diseases caused due to unhealthy fat distribution

A valuable research was conducted at Lulea University of Technology and Umea University. Scientists studied and defined relations between application of steroids, body fat distribution and several undesirable reactions of anabolic steroids. The research has displayed that steroid users may suffer from abnormal fat distribution that can result in heart attacks and other diseases of cardiovascular system.
The results of the study and conclusions were published in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.
10 Swedish elite lifters were involved in the study. They use anabolic steroids regularly. So, it was studied function of steroids in fat distribution.
It is affirmed that lifters who use steroids possessing anabolic and androgenic properties face risks experiencing heart attacks. The experts at Lulea University of Technology and Umea University have studied the way body fat is distributed in lifters that use steroids having anabolic and androgenic properties. It has been seen that unhealthy fat distribution can be a reason for disorders of cardiovascular system.
The lifters that were involved in the study were divided into 2 groups. Fat distribution was studied in all lifters. The lifters of one group administered anabolic steroids. The lifters of another group didn’t use steroids.
The research has displayed that those that use steroids have more reduced fat deposits below the waist. Thus, they have lower levels of gynoid fat.
DEXA scanner which is commonly used to study osteoporosis has been utilized in order to measure fat distribution in these lifters.

Colin Daynes’ Olympic dreams will not become real

The Canadian wrestler Colin Daynes failed a test for banned medicines. His Olympic dreams will not become real. He was sentenced to 2-year ban.
Last year the wrestler was chosen for the Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame.
The athlete was sentenced to the ban by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sports. He failed a drug test, when he won a gold medal in the 74-kg weight category.
Colin Daynes tested positive for Drostanolone, Boldenone, Tamoxifen and Furosemide. Every of these products is in the list of prohibited medicines of the World Anti-Doping Agency. As for Drostanolone and Boldenone, they belong to anabolic steroids. Furosemide represents a diuretic product. It serves as a masking agent for other preparations. Tamoxifen is a preparation which is recommended for prevention of unwanted consequences which appear due to steroid cycles.
The athlete admitted to administration of prohibited medications and accepted the sentence. Colin Daynes said that he administered the forbidden medicines in order to get recovery from an injury. The athlete told to The Star Monday night that he desired to recover in order to take part in the 2012 Olympics. The wrestler noticed that a naturopathic physician advised him to take these medicines. The athlete also added that he hadn’t known that the medications were prohibited. According to his affirmations, if he had known, he wouldn’t have participated in competitions.
Colin Daynes wanted to represent Canada at the Olympics again. He represented his country at the 1996 Olympics which were in Atlanta.
The wrestler didn’t put efforts to defense himself. He noticed that there was no any difference whether the forbidden products were found in the blood or not. They were in the system.
Previously Colin Daynes also competed in mixed martial arts. Colin Daynes had to qualify internationally. The athlete thought that he would compete at the Olympics in London last time. Then the wrestler’s career ends. But he was sentenced to ban because of positives for prohibited drugs.
His personal trainer Bill Hogarth notices that that the things are too bad. But the wrestler didn’t want to lie. Hogarth hopes that Daynes’ reputation will not be destroyed. During the career Colin Daynes won 62 gold medals, 11 silver and 5 bronze medals.

Australian man acquired 1 kg of testosterone in order to use it for weight losing

Carlton Alloysius Hayes, a person from Australia, was caught possessing almost a kg of Testosterone Propionate. He ordered powder of this medication via internet and acquired it from overseas. This person also desired to purchase benzyl benzoate, a chemical which is utilized in order to prepare solution for injections from powder. When police officers found out that this man ordered this chemical, he was asked about purpose of purchasing it. Carlton Alloysius Hayes affirmed that he wanted to get it for a friend. But he added that he had forgotten the name of the friend.
Then Hayes himself contacted policemen and asked them to come to his place. When they came, Hayes showed that he possessed two bags of white powder. He also acknowledged that he had ordered benzyl benzoate in order to mix it with the powder and ready solution for injections.
Carlton Alloysius Hayes weighed circa 156 kg, when he was in the court. He noticed that he couldn’t lose weight, although he trained at the gym. Thus, he took steroids to lose weight and look better. This man noticed that he hadn’t had any desire to sell steroids. He acquired the testosterone powder for personal intake.
A defense attorney for Hayes noticed that his client had a good reputation. He was ever a hard worker.
Although he had to be sentenced to imprisonment because he purchased steroids from overseas, the judge’s decision was to sentence him to certain months of suspended jail. So, this person avoided prison.

Successful war on illegal sale of steroids in Poland

A criminal group that manufactured and sold anabolic steroids was busted by Poland’s police officers. More than 90 police officers and border police were involved in the investigation linked with this illegal drug ring. Customers were chiefly from North America. Police officers arrested 19 individuals: 6 women and 13 men. They were charged with illicit manufacture and sale of steroids and money laundering.
Investigators determined that the group was dealing with steroids since March 2008. The drug ring advertised steroids for gaining of muscle mass and well-being in general. The medications were offered for sale per internet. Individuals from the USA, Canada, France, Belgium, etc. placed orders and obtained illegal medicines.  Steroids were packed in fake packages and delivered to customers. There was a member of the group that was responsible for getting money and transferring it to members of the drug ring.
Homes and business offices of the drug ring were raided. Police officers found huge doses of steroids and packages that were prepared for shipment abroad. Certain cars, including BMW X6, Mercedes S500 and Jeep Grand, watches, jewelry and other objects were seized. The total value of seized objects and money was estimated. It was about 1 million Polish zlotys.
It was determined by police officers that 3 persons represented the leadership of the illegal group. They face 15-year imprisonment.
This investigation conducted by Polish police officers was successful. It was not the first successful drug investigation in Poland. Last year Poland’s police busted another illegal steroid ring. 7 individuals were arrested. Approximately 80 policemen participated in that investigation. Police also reported about substances that were found in possession of that drug ring.

New studies have displayed that dutasteride doesn’t affect muscle mass caused by testosterone use

According to a trial, the 5-alpha reductase inhibitor dutasteride (Avodart) doesn’t affect fat-free mass in healthy males who take testosterone.
A study connected with this issue was performed. While fat-free mass was increased by 0,6-7,1 kg during 20 weeks in males who applied dutasteride and Testosterone Enanthate, fat-free mass was enhanced by 0,8-8,1 kg in those that administered placebo and testosterone. As for muscle power, sexual functions and volume of prostate, they didn’t differ in males of these two groups.
5-alpha reductase inhibitors are applied clinically for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and androgenic alopecia. These are disorders which commonly appear in middle-aged and old men.
DHT represents the chief metabolite of testosterone. But the role of DHT in human development is not is not understood. It is suggested that DHT plays vital role in development of prostate and phallus.
Middle-aged and old men with reduced testosterone levels that take testosterone drugs have risks connected with decreased muscle size and sexual disorders.
Scientists also study and develop nonsteroidal selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs). It is claimed that SARMs and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors are safe because DHT is probably not necessary for effects on fat-free mass, strength and sexual activity. It is also doubted whether DHT plays any role for androgen’s effects on hematocrit, hemoglobin, lipids and some other factors.
Shalender Bhasin and his colleagues at the Boston University have performed a clinical trial in order to set whether 5?-reduction to DHT is needed in order to mediate androgen’s effects on muscle mass. Furthermore, the specialists evaluated role of 5?-reduction on sexual functions, hematocrit and levels of lipid.
The research conducted by Bhasin and his colleagues involved healthy males that were 18- 50 years old and had normal testosterone levels. They used Testosterone Enanthate and dutasteride or placebo. Measures of Testosterone Enanthate ranged from 50 to 600 mg per week.
Since 5 ?-reductase inhibitors enhance testosterone levels, all men were given also gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist in order to block natural testosterone.
The results of the study displayed that fat-free mass was enhanced due to usage of testosterone. It didn’t differ substantially in men of these two groups. Muscle strength which was also increased due to administration of testosterone didn’t differ between the two groups too. Sexual activity, prostate volume, sebum production, hemoglobin, acne, hematocrit didn’t differ essentially between those who used placebo and dutasteride.
The scientists conclude that effectiveness of 5?-reductase inhibitors can be limited in males that have normal or high testosterone levels. That’s why it is necessary to check testosterone levels in order to determine how bodies will respond to 5 ?-reductase inhibitors.
So, the study has manifested that muscle mass is not affected by 5?-reductase inhibitors.  Males should know that if they have enhanced levels of testosterone or introduce exogenous testosterone in their bodies, 5?-reductase inhibitors will not cause shrunken prostate.

Spain’s police detained 10 persons that were involved in huge doping ring

Spain’s national police busted a huge illegal drug ring.
According to reports of police, athletes that tested positive at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Vuelta a Espana got steroids and other related products from this illicit drug ring.
10 persons that were implicated in this doping ring were arrested. Professional cyclists and other athletes had links with this illegal drug network.  It was a prominent source of steroids and other related drugs in the world of top athletes.
The investigation was codenamed “Operation Skype”. The physician  Alberto Beltran Nino was the leader of the doping ring. He is a former doctor of Liberty Seguros team. This person was detained and sentenced to prison, when he tried to flee from Madrid to Columbia. Cezar Perez, the former personal trainer of the Spanish runner Marta Dominguez, was also arrested by Spain’s police.
However the center of the drug ring was set in Barcelona, it represented a multinational business. The ring was connected with Morocco and Columbia. Steroids, HGH and EPO CERA were distributed by this illicit drug ring.
The physician Beltran also worked with Xacobeo-Galicia team. David Garcia, the rider of this team, tested positive for EPO at the 2010 Vuelta.
The investigation began summer last year. It was originally related to the runner Jose Luis Blanco after he was sentenced to 2-year ban because of positives for forbidden medicines.
